Do you have your mud run gear ready? Training for your next mud run can be greatly enhanced by obtaining and breaking in the right mud-running gear. Running through mud can be an awesome and invigorating experience if your gear is right, fits well and holds up to extreme conditions and weather. You’ll need gear that can withstand everything from wind to water and rocks to riptides. Depending on your mud run, you might need gear to keep you warm or gear to keep your body temperature to a minimum, including running shoes, shorts or tights, gloves for grip, shirts, hoodies and more… Most of what you need can be picked up at your local sporting goods store, but you’ll most likely save a lot by thinking ahead and purchasing what you need online. I’ve listed a bunch of recommended gear below for your perusal, much of which I have used myself.

- P90X: Tony Horton’s 90-Day Extreme Home Fitness Workout DVD Program
WOW! This is probably one of the best home-training series I’ve ever used. Sure, you need some additional equipment like a yoga mat, pull-up bar and some dumbbells or kettle bells, but the investment is small and the results are tremendous. A few things about P90X…it’s tough, seriously tough. The series comes with 13 DVDs, each one containing a different workout. Some of my favorites are the Kenpo X (kicking and punching, yeah!), Plyometrics, Core, Ab Ripper X and Yoga X. The low-impact Cardio X is also a good go-to for a second workout. Tony presents each exercise with clear instructions, an awesome attitude and some very appreciated humor. You won’t be disappointed.
- INSANITY: 60-Day Total Body Conditioning Workout DVD Program
You want CORE? Insanity will eat you up and spit you out! Even the warm-ups for this are challenging. My mud run buddy and I used the Insanity program as preparation for our first Tough Mudder and are lucky that we did! Difficult? Yes! Insane? Hell yes! Worth it? Every penny.
